The program ended May 31, 2008, but current grant-holders are still being serviced!
If you haven't applied by that date, it's too late for a grant, but not too late to protect your home!
My Safe Florida Home is a state-underwritten program designed to financially assist Florida homeowners in strengthening their homes against severe weather. While we have a link in our "Helpful Links" page to take you directly to all you need to get started in this program, here are a few of the criteria:
1) The program applies only to single family detached homes worth $300,00 or less (building ONLY), with a permit issued prior to March 1st 2002.
2) You occupy the home at least six months of the year and have a current homestead exemption.
3) Your home is in a wind borne debris region (see map below).
4) Covered repairs now only include window and/or door coverings and gable bracing. Roof truss tie-downs, impact doors and windows, etc are no longer covered.
5) The process involves getting an inspection first (some folks qualify for a free one, others pay about $150), then getting the inspector's report and applying for the grant. You will then get an award letter specifying the grant amount for the recommended upgrades. Find an approved contractor, get the work done (and pay for it) then submit your completion documents to the state and you will be re-imbursed for the grant amount!
6) Contact your insurance company and see what your efforts can do to reduce your insurance premiums- some people are experiencing serious reductions in their premiums after their upgrades are complete.
INSURANCE NOTE:
Even if you don't qualify for the My Safe Florda Home Program, Florida law demands insurance companies give discounts to ALL homeowners (yes, individual condos, etc. as well, but not whole association policies) if certain "hardening" measures are present; you may still qualify for serious reductions in your wind storm insurance if your home qualifies. Many newer homes already have the upgrades built in! You can call your agent to find out what windstorm protection measures your carrier is looking for. Get the inspection done, perform any upgrades needed and submit the report and proof of upgrades completed to your insurance carrier. The process may reveal that you can more than make (any of) your upgrade dollars back even if you don't get a grant from the State, or you may not need any upgrades at all!!

Being prepared is important- it's not IF there will be a storm in your area, but WHEN will there be one. Don't wait!!

Wind borne debris region as specified in the current Florida Building Code (120 MPH or more).
